Ajax Amsterdam trounced Rangers 3-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday, with Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey having the final laugh. Bassey played the entire match for the Dutch champions against his former club, Rangers.
On his first visit to the stadium where he made his name, the 22-year-old, who played for Rangers for two years, delivered a controlled performance. Bassey completed 84% of his passes, with 81 touches, won 100% of his tackles, one interception, and five ground duels.
While Bassey was denied a clean sheet when James Tavernier converted a late penalty, Ghanaian international, Mohamed Kudus scored a goal and assisted another as Ajax finished third in Group A, behind Napoli and Liverpool.
The 22-year-old Ghanaian added a third goal, but it was deemed offside by VAR. Chico Conceicao scored the third goal with a minute remaining to restore the Gers’ two-goal lead.
