The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially introduced a new numbering format for fixed phone lines across the country. The NCC’s announcement signals a shift from the previous eight-digit format to a 10-digit numbering system, involving the addition of the “02” prefix before the existing fixed phone numbers.

The NCC issued a statement to inform the public about this change and provide clarity on the fixed phone lines transition process. According to the statement, both the old eight-digit format and the new 10-digit format will coexist until the designated cut-over date of December 31, 2023. Starting January 1, 2024, the new numbering format, beginning with the “02” prefix, will become fully operational.

The statement about the fixed phone lines further elaborated, “For example, in the new order, to dial the hitherto existing number, 09461700, please dial 02094617000.

“Additional examples are: For Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano’s current number format of 014630643, 094630643, 084460643 and 064460643, will now be 02014630643, 02094630643, 02084460643 and 02064460643 respectively in the new numbering format.

“However, it is important to note that the change only affects the Fixed Telephone Numbers. There is NO CHANGE to the existing mobile numbering format.

Why Nigeria’s Fixed Phone Lines are Adopting 10-Digit Numbers

The NCC’s decision to implement this new numbering format for fixed phone lines align with international practices set forth by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations body overseeing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The NCC emphasised its commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities within the ICT sector by making this announcement.

“The announcement is made to give expression to a key responsibility of the NCC and it is consistent with the practices of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations arm supervising Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).”

This change is expected to have wide-ranging implications for businesses and individuals who utilise fixed phone lines across Nigeria. As the country prepares for this transition, stakeholders are encouraged to update their contact information and ensure a seamless shift to the 10-digit numbering format.
