Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has stated that the insecurity in Nigeria is not as dire as it is often portrayed by foreign media outlets and Nigerians in the diaspora. Speaking at the 2025 Oodua Progressives Union (OPU) World Congress in Ibadan, Oyo State, Adams criticised what he described as excessive propaganda from Western media, which, he said, amplifies negative perceptions of the country.
Adams, addressing attendees of the congress, emphasised that every nation faces security challenges, and Nigeria’s situation is no different. He explained that the OPU has been instrumental in bringing members of the Yoruba diaspora back to Nigeria each January, which has helped reduce the fear and misconceptions about the country’s safety.
He encouraged Nigerians, particularly the Yoruba, to visit Nigeria, as their presence at the congress challenged the narrative that the entire country is unsafe. While Adams acknowledged the government’s efforts in tackling insecurity, he also urged more action to ensure effective security nationwide.
In addition to the congress, the OPU has planned social initiatives, including sinking boreholes to improve access to potable water and organising a medical outreach for 2,000 individuals. The event also celebrated cultural aspects, with Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, Oyo State’s Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, announcing plans for the upcoming 2025 World Egungun Festival, which will feature more than 150 masquerades.
