The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, NPM, convened a conference and workshop for the heads of all Police Investigation Units at the Nigeria Police Resource Center in Jabi, Abuja, on Monday, November 11, 2024.
The workshop’s primary aim was to elevate the professionalism and standardisation of criminal investigations within the Nigeria Police Force. It also sought to enhance the investigative practices of detectives, ensuring that all procedures are thorough, unbiased, and committed to upholding the principles of justice.
Notably, the event featured a lecture by Professor Ayodele Atseluwa of the University of Lagos, who spoke on “The Child Justice System in Nigeria: An Overview.” Professor Atseluwa’s presentation underscored the importance of safeguarding the rights of children in the justice system.
In his remarks, IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of children.
He emphasised the force’s dedication to adhering to the highest legal and ethical standards, particularly those outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The IGP assured that the Nigeria Police Force will continue to implement child-friendly policing practices that are supportive, non-traumatic, and respectful of children’s rights. These efforts aim to preserve the dignity of young people while fostering a protective and nurturing environment.
The workshop followed recent developments in which children aged 14 to 17 were brought before a court in Abuja for an initial hearing regarding their alleged involvement in #EndBadGovernance protests earlier this year.
Additionally, the head of the Nigeria Police Force’s Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Unit, CP Hycenth Edozie, provided insights into efforts to strengthen operational frameworks for combating terrorism and other violent crimes. He also delivered a session on capacity building in money laundering and terrorism financing.
The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in refining its investigative practices and prioritizing child protection. Through continuous training and a commitment to high standards, the force is working toward building a stronger, more competent police service that will contribute to a just and secure society.
