Members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives have urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Federal Fire Service, and other safety agencies to improve their emergency response abilities during crises.
This resolution by the lawmakers came after they adopted a motion titled “Need to Improve Nigeria’s Emergency Response and Management” during Wednesday’s plenary session. The motion was moved by Hon. Jafaru Leko, who represents the Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency in Bauchi State.
In leading the debate, Hon. Leko noted that the ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies and disasters is crucial for ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of Nigerians. He argued that a well-structured and efficient emergency response system is essential for minimising the impact of such incidents.
The House acknowledged that Nigeria has faced a series of emergencies in recent times, with the devastating explosion that occurred in Ibadan on January 16, 2024, highlighting the need for a robust and coordinated emergency response system.
Lawmakers expressed concern that in some instances where emergency response systems are available, lack of access roads and other environmental or logistical challenges have impeded timely responses to emergency situations.
The House also noted a lack of public awareness and education on emergency preparedness and response, which could empower citizens to play an active role in their own safety. Many Nigerians, for example, do not know the fire service control room number, where it is available.
Recognising the importance of improving Nigeria’s emergency response capacity and resources, the House urged the Federal Government to supervise relevant emergency agencies like NEMA, FRSC, and the Federal Fire Service to establish clear protocols and communication systems for timely and effective information sharing during emergencies.
The lawmakers also called for strengthening and modernising Nigeria’s emergency response infrastructure, including establishing state-of-the-art emergency operation centers and purchasing sufficient fire trucks and emergency management ambulances to efficiently serve the Nigerian populace.
In a resolution, the House has mandated the Committees on Emergency and Disaster Management, Interior, and Federal Road Safety Commission to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
