Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in Nigeria collectively invested N22,782,065,914.14 in solar power installations across the country in 2024. The projects, aimed at enhancing rural electrification, street lighting, and infrastructure, were carried out under various contracts.
Key projects included the Federal Ministry of Agriculture’s installations of solar streetlights in Kebbi, Kano, and other states, while the National Rural Electrification Agency focused on electrifying markets and rural areas. Payments ranged from N573 million to over N1.2 billion per contract.
The government also announced the “Desert to Power” project, funded by $700 million from the African Development Bank, to harness northern Nigeria’s sunlight for renewable energy.
Despite these investments, critics like Kunle Olubiyo, President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, have called for greater funding and stricter oversight, citing Nigeria’s lagging renewable energy progress compared to global standards.
