The U23 Men’s National Team (Olympic Eagles) and the Senior Men’s National Team (Super Eagles) both performed poorly in important international matches this week, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has apologised to Nigerians for their performances.
Two days after the U23 team lost to Guinea in the first leg of their final U23 AFCON qualifying match, the Super Eagles lost 1-0 to Guinea Bissau’s Djurtus in an AFCON qualifying match at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau declared that the Federation was totally baffled by the subpar performances but that it would work tirelessly to ensure the teams improved in their qualifying games.
We tender an unreserved apology to Nigerians for the poor results,” Gusau said. “We worked and planned hard for good results but things turned out differently on the pitch.”
“Our focus now is on redeeming the situation in the return matches early next week.”
The U23 team’s prospects to advance to the U23 AFCON against Guinea on Tuesday in Rabat were encouraged by the NFF President.
Gusau is still optimistic that the Super Eagles will triumph in Bissau on Monday in order to reclaim first place in their AFCON 2023 qualification group.
