Nigerian musician, Omah Lay has questioned local authorities over his lengthened detention in Uganda.
Omah Lay was arrested by Ugandan Police on Sunday alongside Tems, another Nigerian musician and her manager after they were accused of flouting the country’s COVID-19 rules.
In his recent disclosure of the situation in the country, Omah Lay said authorities in the East African country are not allowing an intervention from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Is there something bigger at play in Uganda? Why do I have to take the fall for it???” he tweeted.
“Why is Uganda not letting @NigeriaMFA step into this? They have been trying to secure our release to no avail.”
Reports of Omah Lay and Tems’ arrests made the rounds on Sunday evening but the musician dismissed it as a minor issue that will be sorted in no time.
The issue has now snowballed into a difficult situation that has seen foremost Nigerian artistes tweeting with the hashtag #freeOmahlay.
The Ugandan Police has accused Omah Lay, Tems and her manager, Muyiwa Awoniyi of “negligently doing acts likely to spread an infectious disease”.
“The Nigerian trio of Stanley Omah Didia alias Omah Lay, Temilade Openyi alias Tems and Muyiwa Awomiyi have been charged to court in Makindye on charges of negligently doing acts likely to spread an infectious diseases C/S 171 of the Penal Code Act.”
In different photos on social media, Omah Lay was pictured in handcuffs with one other person.
The country’s Police also confirmed that they were arrested alongside four Ugandans.
Organizers of the event in which both artistes featured are yet to release an official statement.
