It was learned on Thursday that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is divided over the G-5 governors’ drive for a mini-convention.
According to the information obtained, the action is intended to ensure Dr. Iyorchia Ayu’s permanent resignation as PDP National Chairman. However, other Ayu supporters have argued that such a convention is impossible while the court is still considering the suspended chairman’s case.
Additionally, it was discovered that the planned mini-convention will provide a chance to change the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party from its current composition.
The National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who is fighting for the PDP governorship candidate ticket for the November 11 Imo State election, is among the NWC members who may be sacked, according to a party source.
Other NWC members who were nominated by the G-5 governors but who are thought to have switched allegiances to rival factions might also not be kept.
One of the reasons the party lost the most recent presidential election was the uproar over a mini-convention.
The G-5 is made up of Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).
Additionally, it was discovered that the G-5 governors are making every effort to hold the mini-convention before May 29, when four of them will have served their second and final terms in office.
Only Governor Makinde of Oyo State, who was re-elected in the most recent election, will hold the role of governor until 2027.
In contrast to the governors’ request that its zoning go to the South before the most recent general election, a source close to the G-5 indicated the North may still retain the national chairman.
The source claims that PDP may choose a candidate from the South for the presidency in 2027.
