Nigeria’s National Population Commission (NPC) has registered 424,302 births in Gombe State between January and November.
Mr. Adedeji Adeniyi, the head of NPC’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in Gombe State, provided these details on Friday in Gombe. Out of the registered births, 44.13 percent (187,283) were girls, and 55.86 percent (237,019) were boys.
The registrations, carried out in more than 100 registration centers in the state, covered children from 0 to 17 years old. Of these, 76,900 were children below the age of one, with 33,760 being girls and 43,140 boys.
Children aged one to four numbered 285,010, with 125,230 girls and 159,780 boys. Those between four and 17 years old totaled 62,392, with 28,293 girls and 34,099 boys.
Adeniyi highlighted that the NPC has enhanced measures and collaborated with critical stakeholders in the state to encourage birth registration. The transition from analogue to electronic birth registration, in partnership with UNICEF, has made the process seamless. He urged residents who have not registered births to do so, emphasising the importance of birth registration data for government planning and intervention.
Adeniyi also expressed concern about the poor registration of deaths in the state, urging residents to register deaths promptly. He emphasised that death registration provides crucial information for government planning and decision-making.
