Nigeria’s President Buhari Meets with Southwest Governors Makinde, Akeredolu on Herdsmen

President, Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria on Wednesday hosted two governors from the Southwest of the country.

The President hosted Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State to discuss their state’s current security challenges.

Akeredolu had in the past week ordered the eviction of Fulani herdsmen from Ondo State, after a swathe of kidnapping and murder cases, reported to be perpetrated by gun-wielding herdsmen.

The governor’s move sparked a debate in Nigeria on the constitutional veracity of his action. Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has since come out to defend the move.

Makinde is fighting to contain rampaging Fulani herdmen, gun-wielding and found to be behind some of the state’s kidnapping cases. In another wave, he’s fighting to control a popular Yoruba personality in the state, Sunday Adeyemo, known as Sunday Igboho.

Adeyemo, famous in Oyo State for his antecedents in the politics of the state led a group to the location of the Fulanis in the Oke-Ogun area of the state and set their properties ablaze. This was done after his seven days ultimatum had lapsed.

Makinde has shown his displeasure with the move which has been greeted with mixed reactions in Nigeria.
