Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari allays speculations of third term bid

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria says he will not run for a 3rd term, allaying fears of a possible 3rd term bid in 2023.

The Nigerian President who is in his second term in office said Nigerians should count him out of any third term agenda.

While speaking at the National Executive Council (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Friday, the President reiterated that the Nigerian constitution precluded him from seeking a third term, more so, that he did not have any plan of contesting for a third term.

He further stated that such speculations coming from some quarters were untrue.

Recall that, Human Rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Femi Falana, had recently alleged that Buhari had been clamping down on the media to water ground for a third term bid.

“Our country has gone to the dogs, and the media must help. That is why the war is against the media because, for the 2023 race, the media must be silenced”, Falana said at an event in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.

He went on to say:

“You may have a third term campaign very soon. Very soon, they are going to destroy all possible opponents and they have started. So, by the time they bring in the third term agenda, the media would have been gone but we are not going to allow it”.
