Former Edo state Governor and senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole on Saturday, accused Nigeria’s security agencies of failing to protect the lives of the people due to glaring negligence.
Senator Oshiomhole spoke during the Nigerian Senate’s Plenary held on December 30. It was on the subject of insecurity in Nigeria, with the recently bandit-hit Plateau state as a special focus.
According to the Senator who moved a motion that the Senate immediately summons all heads of security agencies in the country, it was their duty to protect citizens, and they had been failing in that regard.
His words:
“They [Security heads] came here and assured us that they can secure the country, but we can all agree that nothing much is changing.
“We need to bring them back here.
“To show the seriousness of this hallowed chambers…, I say that we summon the security agencies to tell us why we should not hold them responsible for these killings.
“If somebody spends three days in Plateau, and has the kind of information that has been shared with us here, it shows that there was proper planning.
“You can’t carry out that level of planning in secret and it doesn’t leak.
“If civilians are aware, how come those who are paid to secure are not aware?
“We need to let them know that we are pained, we are angry with them for failing in their duties.
“They need to know that each time a Nigerian is wasted, we hold the security agencies responsible, and there must be consequences on their part.
“Nigeria doesn’t owe anybody a job. They [security agencies] owe us a duty to perform the job that they have asked for.”
The heads of security invited to appear before the Senate are: Chief of Army Staff Taoreed Lagbaja; Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) Yusuf Bichi, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, and Chief of Air Staff Hassan Abubakar,
