The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported that the retail cost of refilling a 5kg cylinder of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) commonly known as cooking gas, soared from ₦4,642.27 in April 2023 to ₦6,521.58 in April 2024, marking a 40.48% increase over the year.
In its report released on Wednesday, the NBS revealed that on a month-on-month basis, the price dipped by 1.06%, from ₦6,591.62 in March 2024 to ₦6,521.58 in April 2024.
The NBS also noted that the retail price per litre of household kerosene (HHK) climbed by 24.04% in April 2024, reaching ₦1,439.64 compared to ₦1,160.67 in April 2023.
The month-on-month kerosene price rose by 6.29% from the ₦1,354.40 recorded in March this year 2024.
A state-level analysis indicated that Bauchi recorded the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas at ₦7,000, followed closely by Kano at ₦6,998.67, and Yobe at ₦6,962.50.
Meanwhile, Adamawa recorded the lowest price at ₦5,470, with Enugu and Katsina following at ₦5,973.53 and ₦5,981.82 respectively.
Benue reported the highest average price per litre at ₦1,788.47 for Kerosine, followed by Kaduna at ₦1,761.62 and Plateau at ₦1,717.78 not far behind.
In contrast, the lowest prices were found in Katsina at ₦1,222.22, followed by Jigawa at ₦1,240.74, and Kwara at ₦1,252.38, the report stated.
The new report comes amidst escalating living costs nationwide, exacerbated by a worsening inflation, insecurity and other contributing factors.
