The Super Eagles of Nigeria have climbed three places in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, now sitting 36th globally.
This improvement follows their recent victory over Libya in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier earlier in the month, with Nigeria also moving up to fourth in the African standings.
Nigeria, under interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, is showing steady progress, overtaking Tunisia and Côte d’Ivoire to join Africa’s top five football nations.
Morocco continues to lead the African rankings, securing 13th place globally, followed by Senegal in 20th and Egypt in 30th.
Previously ranked 39th in the last FIFA men’s world rankings released in September, Nigeria now holds 36th position, just ahead of Algeria in 37th.
On the global scene, Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, maintains the top spot, followed by France in second place.
Spain, England, Brazil, and Belgium complete the top six. Portugal is seventh, followed by the Netherlands, Italy, and Colombia.
Some countries recorded notable jumps in the October 2024 rankings. Algeria moved up four places to 37th, Peru climbed five spots to 38th, and Greece rose six positions to 42nd. Cameroon also returned to the top 50, now ranked 49th globally.
The latest rankings reflect a busy international football calendar, including World Cup 2026 qualifiers, AFCON 2025 matches, and Nations League competitions.
“Thirty-two qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 26, 47 for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025, 79 Nations League matches and 17 friendlies were played during the recent international window, making October 2024 a particularly busy month of football and one that has led to a number of changes in the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking,” FIFA said
Nigeria’s recent success adds momentum ahead of future international competitions, with fans hopeful the Super Eagles will continue their upward trajectory under Eguavoen’s leadership.
