In the most recent FIFA rankings in world football, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured the 40th position. Argentina claims the top spot, followed by France in second place and Brazil in third.
Nigeria’s latest ranking follows their victory over Sao Tome and Principe on September 10th in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The Super Eagles emerged as Group A leaders with an impressive tally of 15 points from six matches. Their journey was marked by a formidable offensive display, netting a total of 22 goals, with Victor Osimhen contributing 10 of those goals.
Argentina, the reigning 2022 FIFA World Cup champions, continues to hold the prestigious title of the world’s number-one-ranked football team in the FIFA rankings. Their dominance was showcased through two consecutive victories in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers. Los Albiceleste secured a 1-0 win against Ecuador and achieved a commanding 3-0 victory against high-altitude Bolivia.
Among African nations, Morocco has made a notable rise, climbing two places to seize the 13th position, firmly establishing itself as the leading African country in the FIFA rankings. Meanwhile, Senegal, the reigning African champions, encountered a minor dip, sliding two places to claim the 20th spot globally.
Tunisia, on the other hand, has surged into the top 30 in the world FIFA rankings, ascending to the 29th position. Mali and Cote d’Ivoire both made significant strides, advancing by two places to secure the 49th and 50th positions, respectively, thus breaking into the coveted top 50 ranked teams. This commendable achievement sees them displacing Greece and Paraguay.
As a result of these developments, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) now boasts nine teams within the top 50 rankings, signifying an increase of two teams compared to the previous FIFA rankings.
Furthermore, Guinea-Bissau has marked the most substantial improvement in the FIFA rankings, leaping by six places to claim the 106th position, reflecting their growing prowess on the international football stage.
