The Super Falcons of Nigeria have secured a spot in the women’s football event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, after defeating South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 1-0 on aggregate in the final qualifying round on Tuesday.
This marks Nigeria’s first Olympic appearance since 2008.
Rasheedat Ajibade’s 43rd-minute penalty in the first leg played a crucial role as the Falcons maintained a goalless draw in the second leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Coach Randy Waldrum stuck with the winning lineup from the previous match, ensuring a dominant display early in the game.
Despite a few opportunities for South Africa, Nigeria’s defense, led by Christy Ucheibe and Osinachi Ohale, remained solid.
Goalkeeper Chimaka Nnadozie’s commanding presence in the air thwarted South Africa’s attacking attempts. With a disciplined performance, Nigeria secured the necessary draw to qualify for the Olympics.
This marks the Falcons’ fourth Olympic appearance, having previously competed in 2000, 2004, and 2008.
The 2024 Olympics is scheduled to be held from Friday, July 26, 2024 to Sunday, August 11, 2024 in Paris, France.
Last Friday, Nigeria gained a first-leg advantage in the final round of the Olympic qualifiers with a 1-0 victory over South Africa in Abuja.
