NIMC: Minister says Data Breach Probe Underway

Bosun-Tijani (News Central TV)

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, says an investigation is underway into the alleged breach of Nigerians’ data warehoused at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

In a post on X on Wednesday, the minister said the NIMC and National Data Protection Commission have begun investigating the matter. Tijani said he and his colleague in the Ministry of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo are on top of the matter.

Paradigm Initiative, a digital advocacy organisation, on Monday alleged that Nigerians’ National Identification Numbers (NINs) and other personal data had been compromised and could be bought online for as low as N100.

The group’s Executive Director, Gbenga Sesan, while speaking on Newscentral’s Breakfast show, said his organisation was able to obtain the NIN slip of Nigeria’s communication Minister, Bosun Tijani and that of Vincent Olatunji, the head of Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) for N100 each on anyverify.com.ng

However, NIMC spokesman Kayode Adegoke assured Nigerians that their data wouldn’t be compromised as the probe continues.
