The Federal Government of Nigeria has set January 19, 2021 as the deadline for mobile subscribers to link their National Identification Numbers, NIN, with their mobile phone’s Subscriber Identity Module, SIM, cards.
The deadline stipulates that those who fail to carry out the instruction will have their phones disconnected from the network until they are able to do so.
This has created anxiety among subscribers who complained that the process of getting NIN alone is too strenuous, making the deadline difficult to achieve. However, there are speculations the deadline may be extended as relevant stakeholders met, on Monday, to review the deadline with a view to extending it. The extension would relieve subscribers of unnecessary tension.
A clone account on Twitter had also announced that the deadline for registration was today, but was later dismissed by Dr Isa Ali Pantami, Nigeria’s Minister of Comms & Digital Economy saying it has been postponed to sometime in February
