The World Bank has provided Nigeria with a total of $45.5 million as part of the Identity for Development project through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
This information was revealed in a recent implementation report by the World Bank.
The project, which commenced in 2021, aims to increase the enrollment of Nigerians in the National Identification Number (NIN) system and has a total cost of $430 million. The amount disbursed to date represents 10.5% of the overall $430 million budget.
As a result, in April 2024, the NIMC announced that NIN enrollment had reached 107.3 million, falling short of the target of 148 million enrollees by June 2024.
This development comes amid concerns about the alleged sale of citizens’ data at a price. However, over the weekend, the NIMC refuted the report of a data breach.
