Nine Dead After Bus Plunges Off South African Mountain Pass

A bus carrying 42 passengers, including farm workers, veered off a remote mountain pass in South Africa on Monday, resulting in the tragic loss of at least nine lives, according to authorities.

The accident occurred on Van Rhyns Pass, located approximately 340 kilometres (210 miles) north of Cape Town, in the early evening. The bus reportedly crashed through an embankment, leading to the fatal incident.

Muneera Allie, the head of communication for the Western Cape province’s mobility department, confirmed that nine people had been killed, and 16 others were injured. However, specific details regarding the identities of the deceased and injured have yet to be confirmed.

This tragedy follows a particularly deadly weekend on South Africa’s roads, with more than two dozen fatalities reported across various traffic accidents.
