The National Information Technology Development Agency has warned Nigerians about banking malware that targets users worldwide through advanced phishing campaigns. The warning was issued by NITDA’s Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team on Monday.
The agency said that the updated version of Grandoreiro poses a significant risk, employing “advanced techniques, such as screen overlay attacks and remote device control, to extract sensitive information like banking credentials and personal data.”
According to NITDA, the malware is mainly propagated through phishing emails and fake websites that trick victims into downloading harmful software disguised as legitimate updates or documents.
After installation, the malware overcomes security measures, allowing attackers unauthorised access to users’ devices. NITDA cautioned that this malware could result in financial losses and identity theft.
The agency urged the public to remain vigilant and implement recommended security practices to reduce potential risks.
“Cyber threats like Grandoreiro are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and users must stay alert and adopt strong security measures to safeguard their information,” the agency recommended.
NITDA advised against clicking links or attachments from unfamiliar emails, downloading software strictly from reputable sources, and activating multifactor authentication to protect online banking and financial accounts.
The agency also highlighted the necessity of keeping antivirus software up-to-date, avoiding public Wi-Fi for financial activities, and frequently checking bank accounts for unauthorised transactions.
