A directive to stop the gas supply to electricity-generating firms (GenCos) has been denied by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The authority denied ordering wholesale gas suppliers to halt future gas supplies to businesses because of nonpayment obligations in a statement released on Wednesday.
Reports that the NMDPRA ordered the gas supply to GenCos to be stopped due to N2 trillion in debt were deemed “false and completely unfounded.”
The NMDPRA stated that it had no influence whatsoever on the facts presented at a recent stakeholders’ interaction with the Authority, the OPTS, IPPG, and other oil and gas industry players that took place in Lagos.
“The engagement’s goal was to educate stakeholders about the opportunities, requirements, and advantages related to the wholesale supply license implementation as stipulated by sections 142 and 197 of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
“It was a sequel to a previous stakeholder meeting that took place on November 27, 2024, at the NMDPRA corporate headquarters in Abuja.
“The Authority wants to reassure all of our stakeholders and the public at large that the false statement was never made at that event or anywhere else. They are encouraged to ignore the publication completely, as every effort is being made to ensure that the supply and distribution of petroleum products and natural gas to end users is uninterrupted and seamless as we enter the holiday season and, in fact, throughout the entire year 2025.”
