The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has denied that it distributes subpar petrol with a high burning rate.
In a statement issued on Saturday, February 15, 2025, the NNPCL’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, responded to a viral video stating that its petrol does not last long in fuel tanks.
A video circulated online in which a content creator claimed he paid N925 for a gallon of Dangote petrol at the MRS filling station in Alapere, Lagos, and N945 at the NNPC in Ojodu Berger.
According to him, he put the fuel into different power generators, and the one running on NNPCL fuel died after 17 minutes, while the Dangote petrol lasted 33 minutes.
However, the NNPCL stated that the petrol purchased at their filling station came from the Dangote refinery.

“NNPC Ltd strongly rejects the false and misleading assertions made in a viral video circulating online, which alleges that NNPCL fuel does not last.
“This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from unverified and amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight,” the statement stated.
The company claimed that its fuel “is carefully formulated with one of the best compositions, ensuring optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability for consumers.”
Furthermore, the NNPCL stated that a major portion of the Premium Motor Spirit supplied at its Lagos stations was obtained from the Dangote refinery.
“It is crucial to note that a large portion of Premium Motor Spirit sold at NNPCL retail stations in Lagos—where this deceptive video was created—comes from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in supporting local production and energy security.
“Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, guaranteeing the quality of petroleum products supplied to our consumers,” according to the NNPCL.
It further stated that the “misleading video” is yet another desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to misinform the public and ruin the NNPCL’s reputation.
“NNPC Limited will take legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread false information about our brand and operations. We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation that undermines our operations and misleads Nigerians. Those who indulge in such malicious activities will face full legal consequences,” it stated.
The energy corporation asked the public to dismiss such “fabricated content” and instead rely on verified sources for factual information, stating that it remains committed to ensuring fuel availability, affordability, and quality for all Nigerians while adhering to worldwide industry standards.
