The Osun State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clashed on Monday following the NNPP’s call for Governor Ademola Adeleke to be removed from office in the 2026 governorship election.
In a statement signed by NNPP chairman, Dr Tosin Odeyemi, the party criticised Adeleke’s leadership, describing it as directionless and self-serving rather than being focused on the state’s development.
Odeyemi stated, “Osun deserves better than the current governor. We need a leader with in-depth knowledge of governance — someone who can rise above political bias and genuinely serve the people.”

He called on political parties to work together to put forward a capable candidate for the upcoming election, warning that failure to do so could jeopardise the state’s progress.
In response, the Osun State PDP dismissed Odeyemi’s remarks as baseless, claiming he lacked the experience to fairly evaluate Adeleke’s performance.
The PDP highlighted the governor’s achievements, which they said contradicted the opposition’s criticism.
In a statement signed by the party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Oladele Bamiji, the PDP outlined Adeleke’s successful delivery of over 200 kilometres of road infrastructure, including the state’s first flyover in Ilé-Ifè, as well as projects aimed at easing traffic in Osogbo, such as a dual carriageway and two additional flyovers.
The party also pointed to the clearance of salary arrears running into billions of naira, the rollout of free health insurance for pensioners and persons with disabilities, and the rehabilitation of over 200 primary healthcare centres.
“If Odeyemi is unable to recognise these achievements, it’s evident he is clouded by political resentment,” the PDP said.
The party reaffirmed its confidence in Adeleke’s popularity, saying he remains committed to providing impactful services and development projects across Osun.
They added that the governor would not be deterred by political distractions and would stay focused on the state’s advancement.
With the 2026 election drawing nearer, the political rivalry between the NNPP and PDP continues to intensify, as both parties position themselves for control of Osun’s future leadership.
