The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has secured all the chairmanship and councillorship positions in the recently concluded local government elections across the 44 local government areas of Kano State, achieving a resounding victory.
The Kano Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) chairman, Sani Malumfashi, announced the result at the commission’s headquarters, declaring the NNPP the winner in every contested local government area.
Six political parties took part in the election, which was conducted peacefully across the state.
During the press briefing, Malumfashi commended the orderly manner in which the election was conducted, highlighting that no incidents of violence or electoral misconduct were reported.
“We are pleased to announce that the NNPP has won all the chairmanship and councillorship seats across the 44 local government areas. The election was conducted in a transparent and orderly manner, and we did not receive any reports of violence,” he said.
Observers have regarded the election as a noteworthy accomplishment for the state, commending the effective organisation and security measures that allowed the process to occur without any incidents.
The election ultimately took place following a series of legal challenges that sought to prevent it from occurring.
On Friday, the Kano State High Court granted the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC)permission to carry on with the local government elections, dismissing all efforts by political parties to halt the event.
Justice Sanusi Ma’aji, who oversaw the case, ruled that the Constitution authorises KANSIEC to conduct, manage, and oversee local government elections in all 44 local government areas (LGAs) in Kano State.
The lawsuit was filed by KANSIEC against the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with 13 additional political parties. Observers who followed the proceedings on Saturday reported that local vigilante groups and officials from the Kano Road Transport Agency, Karota, ensured security at the polling stations.
This decision came after the Kano State Police Command announced it would adhere to a court ruling prohibiting its participation in the election.
