Nigerian activist and the Labour Party’s candidate for the 2023 governorship in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has voiced his disappointment with the opposition parties in Nigeria, citing their lack of performance.

Speaking during a live appearance on News Central TV’s show about the ongoing #EndBadGovernance Protests on Friday, Rhodes-Vivour criticised the opposition for failing to actively promote good governance. He attributed this failure to a compromised political system.

“This is not the opposition I expected to see. It is clear that the entire system is not working. It is completely compromised,” he said.

He further expressed his dismay at the performance of opposition members, particularly in the National Assembly.

“I am very disappointed in the level of opposition we see today, especially at the National Assembly. They ought to be doing a lot more, but no one is speaking up.”

Rhodes-Vivour also blamed Senate President Godswill Akpabio for supporting bad governance by not standing up against those in power.

He said that Akpabio’s lack of action shows he accepts the current situation, which leads to poor leadership and neglect of the people’s needs.

News Central reports that last week, Pat Utomi, a Nigerian professor of political economy and management expert, voiced similar concerns about the state of opposition in Nigeria.

Utomi, a member of the Labour Party, shared his disappointment on News Central’s Politics HQ, criticising his party’s lack of active opposition. He also expressed frustration with the elected members of the House of Representatives, accusing them of failing to oppose anything due to corruption.

“The party (LP) itself is not opposing. The opposition leaders at the National Assembly are not opposing. The people elected are not opposing, and this is as a result of corruption,” Utomi had said.
