Nollywood Actor Leo Mezie Loses Long Battle with Kidney Disease

Nollywood actor, producer and writer, Leonard Chimezie Onyemachi, popularly known by his stage name Leo Mezie, has been reported dead.

The actor had been battling with kidney disease for some years now, and only last week, had a transplant.

It is reported that shortly after the transplant, he began to develop complications which worsened his health condition.

On Saturday, May 14 2022, the actor finally succumbed to the disease in an Abuja hospital, aged 46.

Mezie’s sad passing was announced this afternoon via social media by one of his colleagues, Chioma Toplis.

“Actor Leo Mezie is dead. He died on Saturday in Abuja while recovering from kidney transplant. His corpse has been moved to Umuahia his hometown. RIP Leo,” she wrote.

In 2016, Mezie returned from his medical trip from the UK full of thanksgiving for his survival. He profusely thanked Nigerians for their generous donations for his treatment, stating that he was hale and hearty again.

Following his recovery, he pledged to dedicate his life to reaching out to victims of kidney disease, adding that it was a tough journey that required support for the affected.

Unfortunately, the ailment returned, which left the actor and producer bedridden for a long time, until his recent transplant and eventual death.

The Abia State born actor is survived by his wife of 12 years, Maureen and other family members.

Late Leo Mezie ventured into acting since the 1990s, however, his breakthrough came with the movie “Labista,” where he acted alongside Emma Ehummadu, Jerry Amilo, and Ernest Asuzu (who is also dead).
