A High Court in Lagos has sentenced 40-year-old America-trained Nollywood filmmaker, Mbadiwe Emeka, to five years in prison for trafficking 17.3kg of Canada Loud, a narcotic similar to cocaine and heroin.

Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa delivered the verdict after Emeka pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful drug importation brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The filmmaker was arrested on December 24, 2024 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, after a cargo inspection linked him to the banned substance.

Despite his lawyer’s plea for leniency, the court sentenced him to five years but offered an option of a ₦3 million fine. The judge also ordered the forfeiture of seized items, including an iPhone 12 Pro Max, to the Nigerian government.
