Novak Djokovic revealed on Saturday that Andy Murray, his longtime rival turned friend, will join his coaching team ahead of the 2024 season. The partnership will officially begin at the Australian Open in January.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, expressed his excitement about the collaboration in a statement: “I’m thrilled to have one of my biggest rivals on the same side of the net with me, this time as my coach. I look forward to starting the season with Andy and having him by my side in Melbourne, where we’ve shared many exceptional moments throughout our careers.”
Murray, 37, retired from professional tennis in August as a three-time Grand Slam champion. Speaking about his new role, the Scotsman said: “”I am very excited about this and look forward to being on the same side of the net for a change.”
Novak Djokovic also posted a light-hearted video on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: “He never liked retirement anyway.”
The Serbian star has an unmatched record at the Australian Open, having won the tournament 10 times, including four finals against Murray. Their renewed partnership promises to bring an intriguing new chapter to both their legacies.
