Referees in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will enjoy a significant boost in the 2024/25 season, with their pay set to increase by 50% and the addition of new communication gadgets. The season kicks off on Saturday, and this decision follows a commitment made by the NPFL board chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, at the close of the previous season.
Sani Zubairu, President of the Nigeria Referees Association, confirmed on Tuesday that referees are already undergoing training in preparation for the new season. He highlighted that the introduction of these gadgets will significantly enhance referee performance.
Training sessions for referees are being conducted in phases in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
Additionally, for the second time this year, referees will see an increase in match indemnities. Zubairu emphasised the importance of motivation and confirmed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) remains committed to supporting referees’ welfare.
A key factor influencing referees’ earnings in the NPFL is the distance they travel to their match venues. According to a top official of one of the league’s partners, “Their money is calculated by the distance they travel to their match venues. We spend close to 10m on match officials every match day. The least amount a ref can earn is N200,000 or N150,000 per match for transport and feeding,”
He further explained that accommodations are covered 48 hours prior to the match, and officials receive their allowances in cash before departure.
