The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the derailment of a train on the Warri-Itakpe route late Sunday night at Okpara Station, located in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. The incident, which occurred around 10 p.m., left passengers stranded overnight.
Eyewitnesses reported that some passengers were unable to reach their destinations until Monday morning. “The incident happened at Okpara Station last night. Many passengers had their phones and valuables stolen while they slept,” an eyewitness recounted.
In a statement released on Monday, the NRC’s spokesman, Yakub Mahmood, assured the public that operations would soon resume. He stated, “The management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) hereby informs the general public, especially our valued passengers on the Warri-Itakpe route, that following the minor derailment yesterday at Okpara Station, services will resume shortly. Our team of engineers is at the site to restore the track as soon as possible.”
Mahmood added that the Itakpe-Warri (Ujewu) train service was expected to resume by Monday afternoon. He also apologised for the disruption caused by the derailment.
The incident has sparked concerns about safety and security on the route, particularly after reports of theft during the overnight delay.
