Norwegian Refugee Council’s reports has revealed details of Democratic Republic of Congo’s problems with displacement.
The Central African country has the third highest number of internally displaced people in the world today, at more than 5.5 million.
More than one million have also been forced to run for their lives away from the country, with food insecurity hitting high levels, at more than 27 million. A third of Congolese today are living in hunger.
The report by the NRC is focused on three criteria including; lack of funding of refugees, lack of media attention and lack of international political and diplomatic initiatives.
“Despite these urgent needs, support to the country is inadequate, and the situation has become a textbook example of neglect,” Jan Egeland, secretary general of the NRC said in the statement.
According to the report, aid provided by DR Congo in 2021 equalled less than a dollar per person in need of help.
Egeland said people inside and outside Africa are ignoring the wave of problems in DR Congo as it’s not spread enough.
“People inside and outside of Africa with the power to create change are closing their eyes to the waves of brutal and targeted attacks on civilians that shatter communities,”
The report also stated that enough support hasn’t gone to the DRC in comparison with what has been done to help Ukraine.
Egeland said there’s a gulf in the manner of approach to Congolese troubles when related with the support from the international community for Ukraine.
“The war in Ukraine has highlighted the immense gap between what is possible when the international community rallies behind a crisis, and the daily reality for the millions of Congolese who continue to suffer in a deafening silence,” he said.
