The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has conferred the title of Grand Patron on Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in recognition of his contributions, particularly in the health and education sectors.
The award was presented at the Kano Government House by NUJ National President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, accompanied by his deputy, Alhassan Yahaya. The NUJ delegation also used the occasion to introduce the newly elected leadership of the NUJ Kano chapter.
Isiguzo praised Governor Yusuf’s achievements, noting his recent accolade as the “Most Teacher-Friendly Governor of the Year” by the Nigeria Union of Teachers and his Fellowship from the United States Institute of Management and Leadership. These, he said, are clear indicators of the governor’s commitment to good governance.
“Your Excellency, if the teachers say you are the best, we should all take that as a true reflection of your performance. Usually, teachers take to the streets with placards to demand their rights, but in your case, they have commended your efforts in reforming the education sector.” Isiguzo stated.
The NUJ President emphasized the evolving role of the media from solely criticising to practicing development journalism, which involves acknowledging progress while also highlighting areas that need improvement for the public’s benefit.
Isiguzo also requested the governor’s support for hosting the first National Council of Women Journalists in Kano this November and appealed for the renovation of the Kano Press Centre to bring it up to modern standards. Additionally, he urged Governor Yusuf to prioritise foreign training opportunities for journalists in Kano, enabling them to compete globally.
In response, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed his gratitude to the NUJ and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the media in its role.
The details of the event were provided in a press statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.
