NYSC Participants Encouraged to Use BOI Loans for Entrepreneurship

Agency Encourages NYSC Participants to Venture into Entrepreneurship with BOI Assistance

Mr. Augustine Ogiator, the Assistant Director of Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development in Anambra State, has urged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to seize the opportunity provided through the scheme’s collaboration with the Bank of Industry (BOI) to obtain loans for launching their businesses post-service.

Ogiator made this plea during a sensitisation event organised by the scheme in the Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Highlighting the scheme’s proactive approach in partnering with key financial institutions like the Bank of Industry (BOI) and other commercial banks to offer soft loans to Corps members, Ogiator emphasised that this initiative aims to incentivise Corps members interested in acquiring skills and initiating entrepreneurial ventures after completing their service.

Expressing concern over the lack of commitment shown by some Corps members in availing themselves of these loan opportunities, Ogiator stated, “BOI gives loan to corps members, accessible free of charge. The amount of money earmarked for corps members, close to a quarter has not been accessed.”

Ogiator underscored the significance of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme initiated in 2012 to cater to the aspirations of Corps members transitioning into post-service endeavours. He reiterated the core objective of the SAED programme, which is to enhance the productivity of Corps members post-service and reduce reliance on traditional employment avenues.

Furthermore, Ogiator outlined the eligibility criteria for NYSC Corps members interested in accessing the BOI loans, emphasising the necessity for applicants to commence their post-camp SAED training and develop comprehensive business plans at least six months before their Passing Out Parade (POP).
