The Ogun State Police Command announced the arrest of a student-teacher for allegedly hurting and causing an 11-year-old girl to lose her right eye.
Alao Idera, the victim, is a primary six pupil at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in the state’s Obada Oko area.
According to reports, the teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, is a 400-level student at the Ogun State-owned Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijebu Ode, where she is completing her teaching practice programme.
According to Omolola Odutola, a Police Public Relations Officer, Adeyemo was wielding a cane in the classroom when the primary six pupil rushed towards her, accidentally piercing her right eye.
She stated that the pupil was brought to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, the state capital, where the injured eye was surgically removed.
“Idera was promptly transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta for treatment. Following this report, Adeola Adeyemo, a 400-level student from Tai Solarin University in Ijebu Ode who was teaching, was quickly arrested and is currently being interrogated,” she stated.
She added, however, that the teacher did not flog the pupil, and Idera did nothing wrong.
“It was simply a situation where the teacher, preparing for an end-of-year party, was holding a cane, as teachers often do.
“However, when the pupil raced towards her, the cane accidentally injured her eye.”
“After realising that the pupil’s right eye had been removed, the teacher attempted suicide but was quickly rushed to the hospital, where she is currently stable,” she added.
