Senator John Azuta-Mbata has been elected as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
Azuta-Mbata, a former Senator representing Rivers East at the National Assembly, was elected during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation held at the old government lodge in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State, on Friday.
His election follows the zoning of the position to Rivers State after the passing of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who represented Imo State.
Azuta-Mbata, the first Ikwerre native to serve as Senator for Rivers East under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, assumes leadership at a pivotal moment for the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.
In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, pledging to promote unity among Igbo people and address the key challenges facing the community.
His election is regarded as a significant step in fostering inclusivity and regional representation across Igbo-speaking regions.
