Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s spokesperson announced on Monday that she intends to seek a second four-year term as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) when her current mandate expires next August.
The decision comes after considering the strong and widespread support from WTO members.
Okonjo-Iweala officially communicated her decision to seek re-nomination to WTO chair Norwegian Ambassador Petter Olberg on Monday.
The WTO’s African Group has also formally requested that she be available for a second term and proposed that the re-nomination process begin as soon as possible.
No other candidates have put themselves forward for the position as of now. Okonjo-Iweala, who assumed the role in March 2021, has focused on revitalising the organisation, emphasising her ability to facilitate collaboration and achieve results.
