Governor of Ondo State Lucky Aiyedatiwa has initiated a strategic distribution of 6,000 life jackets and launched the clearance of waterways in riverine communities to promote safety and enable seamless water transport.
The initiative, unveiled over the weekend, emphasises the administration’s commitment to averting maritime accidents and fostering economic activity.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Transport, Akogun Olugbenga Omole, the governor described the effort as a thoughtful measure designed to enhance the welfare of those relying on water transport.
Addressing attendees at Ebute Irele in the Okitipupa Local Government Area, Aiyedatiwa stated that the programme spans four riverine local government areas: Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Okitipupa, and Irele.
“It is our firm belief that water transportation can be safe and, at the same time, smooth, devoid of any barriers or obstacles on our waterways.
“That is why the event of today is not only about making life jackets available for travellers on our waterways but also about commencing the clearing of water hyacinth from our waterways, so as to facilitate hitch-free commuting, thereby promoting commerce in these communities and enhancing sustainable livelihood,” he affirmed.
Acknowledging recent tragic boat incidents in states like Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara, Aiyedatiwa expressed condolences to the affected families and governments, reiterating the necessity of proactive measures to prevent such occurrences in Ondo State.
Local stakeholders, including Tosin Adebusoye of Oluwa Boys and Sunday Ijitade of the Idepe/Okitipupa branch, lauded the initiative. They emphasised its potential to enhance maritime safety, protect livelihoods, and support youth empowerment within the communities.
