Nationwide protests erupted in Kenya against government plans to increase taxes, leading to the death of one person, with over 200 injuries and more than 100 arrested, according to rights groups.

In Nairobi alone, 200 people suffered injuries, including from tear gas inhalation and being hit by cars while fleeing police.

The protests, which started on Tuesday, oppose tax hikes that demonstrators fear will burden citizens and businesses, despite some proposals being withdrawn following public outcry.

Parliament passed the Finance Bill’s second reading on Thursday despite ongoing calls to reject the legislation completely.
