Reports say a mining site located in Galkogo village in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State has collapsed, killing one person and trapping over thirty others.
The State Emergency Management Agency said, “One person had been confirmed dead, six were rescued with severe injuries, and more than 30 people trapped”
Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director-General of the relevant agency, disclosed that a building collapse occurred on Monday, 3 June 2024.
He attributed the incident to heavy rainfall causing significant ground instability.
Rescue efforts were hampered due to ongoing tremors at the site and security concerns within the area. A full picture of the rescue operation remains unclear. However, excavators have been deployed to the scene.
Meanwhile, reports indicate banditry activity in Shiroro and Mashegu local government areas. Mr. Baba-Arah stated that bandits reportedly attacked Adogo Malam village on 2 June, abducting six individuals. In Tunga Kawo, bandits allegedly abducted over 20 people and stole cattle.
