Violence erupted at a Zimbabwe Opposition Rally event in Kwekwe, central Zimbabwe, on Sunday, with one person killed and ten others injured.
A group of assailants with spears, machetes, iron bars, and rocks attacked members of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
According to party officials, one man was stabbed to death, while others sustained severe injuries.
Nelson Chamisa, the party’s leader, was forced to cancel his speech due to the violence.
The ruling party denied the claims that it was responsible for the attack the Zimbabwe opposition rally, blaming President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s supporters for the violence.
It comes as human rights organisations warn of rising violence ahead of important by-elections on March 26.
The country’s Vice President had vowed that the opposition would be crushed over the weekend, raising concerns of additional violence.
Security operatives had deployed tear gas and water cannons on Saturday to disperse a CCC gathering that had been approved by the High Court.
