One Rescued, Five Injured as Garden Route Storm Surge in South Africa

At least five patrons at a restaurant in Mariner’s Restaurant in Marina beach were seriously injured when a massive wave caused damage to several structures along the South African coastline yesterday.

The storm surge and spring high tide also caused severe damage to the Cattle Baron restaurant, leading to its closure by SANParks.

Rescue teams and paramedics from the Kwazulu Private Ambulance Service (KZPA) responded to the Marina Beach incident.

KZPA representative Chantelle Botha said the quick response of lifeguards led to the person being rescued from the sea shortly after being washed out.

“Paramedics assessed all the patrons and found five to be seriously injured,” she said.

The affected persons were treated and stabilised on scene before being moved to the medical facility.

In the meantime, The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 storm warning for the Garden Route, as well as a Level 5 storm warning for the Tsitsikamma region.

These warnings come off the back of a storm surge and spring high tide that has struck South Africa’s Southern Cape this weekend.

Huge waves wrecked havoc in George Municipality in the Western Cape after which the municipality closed all beaches in the area. The NSRI has deemed all beaches unsafe due to high waves and erratic water conditions.
