One of the worshippers affected by the fire incident at a mosque in Laraba Abasawa area of Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano has tragically passed on.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Umar Mamman Sanda, disclosed this during a visit to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, where the injured victims were receiving treatment.

The delegation included the Commissioner of Police and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS).

AIG Sanda clarified that the incident was not an act of terrorism but rather stemmed from a dispute over inheritance distribution.

According to him, the suspect, identified as Shafiu Aminu, was dissatisfied with the distribution and resorted to violence. He then used a locally made bomb to execute the act.

“What happened is not associated with any act of terrorism but rather, it was a skirmish that aroused as a result of inheritance distribution.

“The suspect was said to be not satisfied with the distribution … and was reacting to that. He is presently with us and is giving out useful information. Out of the 24 that were admitted here, one is dead. It is really unfortunate. He used a locally made bomb to commit the crime,” the AIG explained.

He expressed his sympathy and support to victims and their families, while suing for calm in the community as security measures were already in place to address the situation.

Sanda said the state government had pledged to offer medical support for the victims currently admitted at the hospital.

News Central reported that Shafiu Aminu attacked the mosque in Kano with around 40 worshippers ablaze during the ‘Subh’ prayer. He thereafter locked the worshippers in with no means of escape, until residents noticed the chaos and rushed to the scene to rescue them.
