Only Three Nigerian Airports Viable, Others Subsidised — FAAN

Only Three Of 22 Airports Viable, Others Subsidised — FAAN

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has said that only three of 22 Nigerian airports, International and domestic, are commercially viable.
Speaking in an interview on Channels TV, Kuku said the 19 other airports are being subsidised due to low passenger traffic.

Kuku said the terminal areas, the landside and the airside of the airports currently managed by FAAN require an upgrade of critical infrastructure.

She mentioned that most of the runways were due for an upgrade as they had exceeded the 20-year validity period.
She said, “Economic activities in states where airports are built drive passenger traffic and not the construction of new airports.”
She prioritised boosting manufacturing, trade, and tourism activities in their domains to increase passenger traffic and revenue over the construction of new airports by some state governors.
