Despite a four-hour meeting with the National Assembly (NASS) leadership on Sunday evening in Abuja, the Organised Labour remains firm in starting a nationwide strike on Monday, June 3, 2024.
Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo stated that the unions lack the authority to cancel the strike and will present NASS’s plea to their members.
The labour unions insist on a new minimum wage of N494,000 and the reversal of the recent electricity tariff hike, even with Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas attempting to prevent the strike.
The current N30,000 minimum wage is deemed insufficient, and not all governors have complied with the wage law that expired in April 2024.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and TUC had set a May 31 deadline for government action.
However, failure to reach an agreement led to the strike declaration.
