Oscar Mabuyane has been re-elected as the chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape. This is coming after postponements, disagreements and litigation throughout the weekend.

Mabuyane secured 812 out of 1,477 ballots counted, who won against closest contender Babalo Madikizela by a wide margin. Madikizela got 662 votes.

Others who won include Mabuyane’s allies; Mlungisi Mvoko bagged 812 votes, beating Xolile Nkompela to become the new Deputy Chairperson.

Lulama Ngcukayitobi was retained Provincial Secretary with 807 votes against Terris Ntuthu who got 667 votes. Helen Sauls-August as Deputy Provincial Secretary with 805 votes.

Zolile Williams emerged Provincial Treasurer with 799 votes to his credit.  The battle for control of the party had been stiff, with both sides pushing hard for their candidates.

Aaron Motsoaledi said they had to attend to some serious issues raised at the conference.

“The issues there were about the authority of the court about Rubusana,” said Motsoaledi.

This related to the ruling on Saturday that rejected an urgent application by some of the members to exclude some of the branches from the Dr BW Rubusana region. Motsoaledi said this was one of the sticking points but the conference eventually forged ahead.
