Barcelona Femeni opened the group stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League with a 9-0 rout of Benfica, with Super Falcons of Nigeria forward, Asisat Oshoala, playing a pivotal role. Head coach Jonatan Giráldez of the Barcelona Femeni decided to start the 28-year-old Oshoala.
Immediately after the kickoff, Barcelona Femeni took the lead when Patricia Guijarro finished off a pass from Oshoala. In the 14th minute, Oshoala set up Aitana Bonmat with the game’s second assist. Next, the Super Falcons’ top player scored in the 34th minute, giving Barcelona a 3-0 lead at the break.
Super Falcons youngster, Uchiebe came on in place of Andreia Norton in the 71st minute, with her team already six goals down
Caldentey’s through ball set up Oshoala for Barcelona’s eighth while Geyse, with Pina’s help, scored the final goal.
Even though Geyse scored twice, it was Oshoala who was voted the game’s Most Valuable Player. The Super Falcon star will be hoping to be in the starting lineup for Barcelona in their upcoming league match against Betis.
It was a monumental match for Oshoala after finishing in 16th place at the most recent Ballon d’Or ceremony.
