The Nigerian government announced over the weekend that 10,112 housing units are currently under construction at 14 active sites nationwide.
At the 6th Africa Housing Awards and Industry End of Year Dinner in Abuja, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Mr Ahmed Dangiwa, said these included 12 Renewed Hope Estates with 250 units each in 12 states, selecting two states from each geo-political zone.
Larger urban projects are being developed in the Federal Capital Territory (3,112 units), Kano (2,000 units), and Lagos (2,000 units), with plans for additional cities in Enugu, Borno, Rivers, and Nasarawa.
Dangiwa thanked the Housing Africa Group and Festus Adebayo for their initiative, stressing that recognising industry efforts motivates further development.
He added that the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme features 14 active sites totalling 10,112 units, with ongoing construction of the 12 Renewed Hope Estates.
He highlighted the housing sector’s potential for economic growth, noting that the program has created over 252,800 jobs, including skilled and unskilled labour.
In just over a year, the ministry has implemented various funding strategies and initiated reforms in land administration, social housing units, and building materials manufacturing.
Shehu Osidi, Chief Executive of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), said that through partnerships and innovative financing, the Bank is improving access to affordable housing for Nigerians.
