Law enforcement in KwaZulu-Nata, South Africa made more than 15,000 arrests during December as part of efforts to combat crime during the festive season.
The Safer Festive Season operations saw a wide range of offences targeted, from violent crimes to alcohol and drug-related violations.
Among the 15,294 individuals detained, over 500 were arrested for murder and attempted murder. Police reported that 256 suspects were linked to murder cases, while 274 were apprehended for attempted murder.
Dangerous weapons, including 359 firearms, more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition, and 769 knives, were confiscated during the operations.
The police crackdown also focused on crimes against women and children, with 296 individuals arrested for rape.
Cases of assault with the intent to cause serious injury were widespread, with 2,525 such incidents recorded. Police revealed that many of these assaults were linked to alcohol consumption.
Efforts to address robbery and theft led to 197 arrests for crimes such as armed robbery, housebreaking, and carjacking. Residential burglaries resulted in 264 arrests, while 46 individuals were detained for stock theft. Drug-related offences were another focus, with 1,367 people taken into custody.
The province also faced issues related to alcohol abuse. More than 1,100 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence, 554 individuals were detained for public intoxication, and 304 were caught drinking in public spaces.
Additionally, law enforcement acted against illegal liquor activities, arresting 887 individuals for unauthorised liquor sales and 15 for illegal distribution.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that 26 suspects were detained for the illicit production of liquor.
The festive season operation aimed to ensure public safety while addressing the root causes of crime in the province.
